Welcome to “Bangladeshi American Women’s Development Initiative (BAWDi)”! This empowering organization supports the Bangladeshi diaspora in Paterson NJ by focusing on women’s and children’s needs, promoting cultural preservation, and fostering community resilience in the Bangladeshi community in Paterson.
BAWDi’s mission is to empower Bangladeshi women and girls through culturally responsive support, advocacy, and safe spaces for growth in the Bangladeshi community in Paterson. Founded in 2012, it addresses unmet needs like health and immigration for the diaspora that grew in Paterson since the 1980s. Key milestones include the 2019 International Mother Language Day event at Paterson Museum, raising $10,000 for COVID-19 relief in 2020 to help 40 families, and launching doula training in 2022 for maternal health. Through partnerships, BAWDi has evolved as a trusted advocate against domestic violence and for civic engagement.
BAWDi offers cultural events like Pitha Utsob and art exhibits, health workshops on nutrition and suicide prevention, maternal support via doula training, and relief efforts such as food deliveries. Immigration aid includes Know Your Rights sessions in Bengali. These programs benefit the Bangladeshi diaspora in Paterson NJ by reducing isolation, enhancing well-being, and blending heritage with integration.
