BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprise, a leader in the seed and agro-industry, has contributed to the growth of agriculture in Bangladesh since 1972. They aim to improve food and nutritional security by ensuring a consistent supply of top-quality agricultural inputs, promoting sustainable farming techniques, and reducing post-harvest losses.
Quality seeds are pivotal in achieving high yields, and BRAC has been at the forefront. They’ve been marketing hybrid maize seeds since 1994 and hybrid rice seeds since 1998, along with producing hybrid maize seeds since 1996-97 and vegetable seeds in 1996. BRAC also established a value chain system for seed production and distribution, ensuring fair prices for farmers.
BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprise is committed to sustainable agriculture to preserve environmental harmony. They actively promote environment-friendly farming by offering micronutrients like zinc and boron to combat soil micronutrient deficiency.
BRAC operates three agricultural research and development centers across Bangladesh. These centers conduct applied research in plant tissue culture, vegetables, rice, and maize, with a soil-testing laboratory capable of analyzing 3,000 soil samples annually. Their researchers focus on creating new varieties tailored to meet the needs of both regional farmers and consumers.
With 22 production centers and around 7,000 contract farmers, BRAC is the country’s largest producer of hybrid maize seeds and the second-largest producer of potato seeds. They also hold the largest market share for rice seeds, maize seeds, potato seeds, and vegetable seeds. BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprise have a 19% market share in hybrid rice, 23% in hybrid maize, 36% in potatoes (of organized seed supplied), and 8% in vegetables.
To ensure high-quality seeds, BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprise employs automatic polymer seed coating treatment and an automatic packaging system. They have five seed processing centers with a processing capacity of 12,000 metric tons per year and 11 modern storage systems with a capacity of 4,400 metric tons.
The company has built a robust value chain system through a network of 450 dealers and over 4,500 sub-dealers nationwide.
