Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA)

Welcome to Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA)!

Mission and History:

FOBANA, or the Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America, kicked off in 1987 as a non-profit, tax-exempt group under IRS 501(c)(3) with Tax ID 26-1747615. It’s all about uniting Bangladeshi groups across North America to keep our language, culture, and heritage alive and kicking. As an umbrella organization, it brings together qualified associations, celebrating our talents through big events and acting as a glue for the diaspora. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it’s non-political and welcoming, focusing on preserving what makes us Bangladeshi while helping folks adapt to life here.

Services and Programs:

They run cool stuff like the FOBANA Scholarship Program, which has handed out nearly $100,000 since 2015 to help students overcome money hurdles for college—apply online if you’re eligible. There’s also the Youth Forum for building leadership in young Bangladeshi Americans, with apps open for bridging generations. Annual seminars tackle real issues like immigration, education, and economic tips, plus they publish a yearly magazine and reports. During crises like COVID, they’ve dished out food, cash, and supplies in the U.S. and Bangladesh.

Community Impact:

FOBANA’s work strengthens our community by fostering unity, supporting education through scholarships, and leading relief efforts that touch lives here and back home. In the D.C. area, it helps immigrants network, integrate, and celebrate heritage, making the diaspora feel more connected and empowered in a big city like Washington.

How to Get Involved:

Jump in by donating via PayPal on the website or joining as a member—invite your local group too. Apply for scholarships or the Youth Forum if you’re a student or young leader. Volunteer on committees or attend conventions for networking. It’s a great way for D.C. folks to give back and stay rooted.
