Laal NYC was born from a 2019 needs assessment revealing the deep isolation faced by Bangladeshi immigrant women in the Bronx—often alone for 8-12 hours daily, leading to mental health struggles. Rooted in historical context like the 1971 Bangladesh War and the 1952 Language Movement, Laal’s mission is to provide resources for healthy, joyful lives, emphasizing language justice and cultural sensitivity for this fast-growing community.
Laal delivers direct services like yoga classes, Bangla-language sex education, reproductive rights workshops, cooperative development, community research, and climate activism. Programs are community-led, with members like Sahreen ‘Shah’ Quadir leading yoga to promote self-care. They serve over 1,500 members, offering spaces to combat trauma and build connections.
By addressing isolation and generational trauma, Laal empowers women to lead with dignity and choice, fostering a movement of joy and organizing. It strengthens the Bronx’s Bangladeshi community, improving mental health and social ties, while honoring cultural revolutions.
