Grand Mughal coastal fortification on the eastern bank of the Shitalakshya River with a massive circular artillery platform.
Erected under Subahdar Mir Jumla in the mid-17th century, Sonakanda Fort was designed specifically to guard river approaches to Dhaka against Magh and Arakanese raiders. Its most dramatic architectural element is a gigantic elevated circular masonry battery with a stairway where cannons were positioned to command the wide river bend.
