The oldest fortified urban city in Bangladesh (3rd century BCE Pundranagara), featuring massive defensive brick ramparts along the Karatoya River.
Dating back over 2,500 years to the Maurya, Sunga, Gupta, and Pala dynasties, Mahasthangarh is the crown jewel of ancient Bengal archaeology. The fortified plateau spreads over 1.5 km surrounded by ramparts, defensive moats, and the sacred Karatoya River. The on-site museum houses artifacts from the 3rd century BCE, terracotta seals, gold coins, and the sacred tomb of Shah Sultan Balkhi Mahisawar.
